چکیده

Scientific journals may counter the misuse, misreporting, and misinterpretation of statistics by providing guidance to authors. We described nature prevalence statistical at 15 (top-ranked Impact Factor) in each 22 scientific disciplines across five high-level domains (N = 330 journals). The frequency varied (Health & Life Sciences: 122/165 journals, 74%; Multidisciplinary: 9/15 60%; Social 8/30 27%; Physical 21/90 23%; Formal 0/30 0%). In one discipline (Clinical Medicine), was provided all examined two (Mathematics Computer Science) no guidance. Of 160 guidance, 93 had a dedicated section their author instructions. most frequently mentioned topics were confidence intervals (90 journals) p-values (88 For six ‘hotly debated’ (statistical significance, p-values, Bayesian statistics, effect sizes, intervals, sample size planning/justification) typically offered implicit or explicit endorsement rarely opposition. heterogeneity top-ranked within between highlights need for further research debate about role can play improving practice.

A comparison of conflict of interest policies at peer-reviewed journals in different scientific disciplines

Scientific journals can promote ethical publication practices through policies on conflicts of interest. However, the prevalence of conflict of interest policies and the definition of conflict of interest appear to vary across scientific disciplines. This survey of high-impact, peer-reviewed journals in 12 different scientific disciplines was conducted to assess these variations. The survey ide...

Multiple Citation Indicators and Their Composite across Scientific Disciplines

Many fields face an increasing prevalence of multi-authorship, and this poses challenges in assessing citation metrics. Here, we explore multiple citation indicators that address total impact (number of citations, Hirsch H index [H]), co-authorship adjustment (Schreiber Hm index [Hm]), and author order (total citations to papers as single; single or first; or single, first, or last author). We ...

Provenance-Based Retrieval: Fostering Reuse and Reproducibility Across Scientific Disciplines

When computational researchers from several domains cooperate, one recurrent problem is finding tools, methods and approaches that can be used across disciplines, to enhance collaboration through reuse. The paper presents our ongoing work to meet the challenges posed by provenance-based retrieval, proposed as a solution for transdisciplinary scientific collaboration via reuse of scientific work...

Research on Scientific Journals: Implications for Editors and Authors

A review of editorial policies of leading journals and of research relevant to scientific journals revealed conflicts between 'science' and 'scientists.' Owing to these conflicts, papers are often weak on objectivity and replicability. Furthermore, papers often fall short on importance, competence, intelligibility, or efficiency. Suggestions were made for editorial policies such as: (1) structu...
